RELIGIOUS LINEAGES OF THE AFRO-BRAZILIAN QUIMBANDA TRADITION

The country of Brazil is the religious and true historical beginnings for the present day American Quimbanda religious tradition. The American Quimbanda religious tradition traces its historical origins directly to the African Congo and to the First Prophet of our religious tradition, Nzinga a Nkuwu who was the first royal Congo King to be baptized into the mysteries of Gnostic Christianity in the year 1485 by Jesuit Priests and the Knights Templar. During the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade of the 1500's, various types of Congolese religions and magical traditions were transported to the New World with the African peoples who were brought to work as slaves on the Portuguese sugarcane and coffee plantations in Brazil. Along with this massive migration of displaced peoples also came along a group of ancient mystics, the Sephardic Jews. The Sephardic Jews traveled to the New World to establish business commerce along the rich trade routes in various sea ports in the New World and also to escape religious persecution which was beginning to take place in Europe at that time. The mystical teachings of the ancient Kabbalah was brought to the New World by the Sephardic Jews which had a great influence in the shaping of the present day American Quimbanda religious tradition. As a result of this very rich cultural exchange which took place between various cultures and religious traditions in the New World, various forms of Afro-Brazilian spiritualism and Quimbanda began to develope and evolved over a 500 year period in Brazil. The Quimbanda religion is still evolving and its magical mysteries can be found being practiced in every corner of the world. All of the following are various Afro-Brazilian religious lineages of the Quimbanda religious tradition found in the United States, Brazil and the liturgical differences and ritual liturgy differences which exist between all of them. Ritual liturgy is the customary public worship done by a specific religious group, according to its particular traditions.
